Jonathan Rosenbaum will never go away

and this is a good thing.

If you hop on over to his site Jonathan Rosenbaum.com he continues to write like a madman AND there is this where he writes the preface (it is well worth the PDF download).

Oh and this "on Film Canons" recorded at the Newberry Library for BEZ.

And do not forget the public classroom that he runs weekly at the Siskel film center.

My kind of retirement.

having revisted the godfather 1 & 2 pretty recently myself, i can't help but disagree pretty vehemently with good old johnny boy. but i think he has a need to be contrarian and his feminine sensibility recoils at a blood-soaked genre like the gangster film anyway. if anything, the two godfather films look all the more astonishing today than they ever did. i think the fact that they work as first class entertainments first is one of the keys to their greatness as populist masterpieces. he spends alot of time criticizing other critics like pauline kael - and makes some valid points. but when you watch the movies again - esp on a big screen, it's hard not to be blown away.
